What’s included?
This download includes x3 pdfs, portrait in colour each featuring ten/five images that all begin with one sound - a, e, i, o, u.
What’s it for?
This resource is to enable learners to practise identifying the first (initial) sound (phoneme) of objects (images) and match these with the correct, matching letter (grapheme).
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds.
How to use it?
An adult prints each sheet out (ideally onto card) and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate the ‘letters’ from the ‘images’ (instructions are included on each sheet itself). These pieces (images and letters) can then be placed on a table top for learners to match - the image with the matching/correct initial letter sound as a two part mini jigsaw puzzle. Each letter only fits the images which have the same initial letter.
This is a fun and engaging way to practise recognising these letters and identifying the correct initial letter (phonics) sound for ten (or five) images (per letter).
Resource Details
The images chosen all have a clear initial letter sound at the beginning but are not words which can easily be sounded out. The focus of this activity is purely to identify the initial letter sound for these images - the cross (top right of each image) indicates that these images are not to be sounded out.
I have grouped the letters of the alphabet together. This sheet is part of the ‘Red Set’ and designed to be used with letters a, e, i, o, u. Exploring this set together gives learners the opportunity to become more familiar with these letters by looking at them more closely. Other sets in this same design are available.
The layout of every letter/sound in this set is in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent.
Resource layout
The font used is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 120, so a large, ‘easy to read’ size.
The images included for each letter are:

What’s included?
This download includes x4 sheets, all portrait orientation, pdf format.
What’s it for?
This set focuses on tricky words, all ‘nouns’ with a matching image. This activity has been designed for learners to look more closely at some of the first 200 high frequency words and attempt to read these words. Although these words are not intended to be ‘sounded out’ as it is difficult to do so - if learners focus on the black letters (red letters indicate sounds are tricky) they can use their phonics knowledge to ‘work out’ the black letter sounds and (along with looking at the images) attempt to read the words.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Y2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource could support pupils with EAL (English as an Additional Language) and older learners with additional learning needs.
How to use it?
Adults pre-cut along dotted lines and shuffle the set of x17 words (and images) then place cards face-up on the carpet/a table top for learners to read and match.
Resource Details…
These words are from the first 200 high frequency word list.
Words have been organised depending on which phonics phase they fit in with. This coded system is made clear by a ‘key’ displayed top, right on every page of the resource.
underlined indicates that together underlined letters have one sound, for example ‘sh’ in ‘shoe’
red letters indicate the tricky/irregular letters, e.g. ‘gi’ in ‘giant’ or letters which may be pronounced differently e.g. the ‘er’ in ‘water’ is often pronounced as ‘uh’ or ‘a’.
the small white cross (top-left of each image box) indicates that these words are not intended to be sounded out, though (as said) if learners focus on the black letters in these words, along with the pictures, they may be able to identify words to read/match them.
Words included
The words on sheets 1 to 4 have been arranged alphabetically and are as follows:
ball
bear
clothes
door
eyes
giant
head
horse
house
magic
mouse
money
one
school
shoe
two
water

What’s included?
This download includes x8 A4 pdf sheets (portrait orientation) which includes an activity sheet and answers for ALL sounds in Phase 2 split into x4 activity sets.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
What’s it for?
This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set has kept little hands very busy and focused (for me!) I hope the same will be true for you! This has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups to be getting on with independently.
Phase 3 (x5 sets) in same design is also available in my TES shop if you like this one.
How to use it?
Each learner needs to cut out and match two ‘phoneme pictures’ to every grapheme (printed on the left side). Dotted lines guide where to cut, though the picture-squares could be pre-cut for those who struggle with cutting out.
Resource Details…
I split ‘phase 2’ into four sets, one set per sheet. Not all phonemes are ‘initial’ letters (in sets 3 and 4 here) - so learners may need this pointing out before working on these independently if you want them to be kept focused.
Set 1
s - scissors, snake
a - apple, avocado
t - torch, tractor
p - panda, pear (learners should watch out not to confuse ‘needle’ with ‘pin’)
i - ink, igloo
n - narwhal, needle (learners should watch out not to confuse ‘needle’ with ‘pin’)
Set 2
m - mouse, milk
d - dog (dachshund, ‘double d’ !), dinosaur (diplodocus, also ‘double d’ !)
g - glasses (green - ‘double g’ ! ), goat
o - (orange) octopus (double ‘o’!), orange
c - cat, clock
k - key, kangaroo
Set 3
ck - sock, duck (‘end’ sound here so may catch out some learners)
e - elephant, egg
u - umbrella (upside -down ‘double u’ !), up (stairs - arrow indicates this)
r - robot, rainbow
h - horse, house
b - balloon (blue - ‘double b’ !), bee
Set 4
ck - truck, black (‘ck’ is reinforced (repeated from ‘Set 3’) instead of leaving a gap)
f - frog, fish
ff - giraffe, coffee
l - lemon, leaf
ll - bull, ball
ss - grass, dress
Optional Extension
Adding the word labels is optional and best provided as an extension for more able/quick learners. These tiny labels can be cut out and added under each ‘phoneme picture’, though the phoneme/grapheme matching should be completed first. The word labels are not consistently sound-out-able and learners would need to use their knowledge of the phonemes/graphemes already matched during the activity and look at the initial/final letter sounds to help them.

What’s included?
x10 sheets (x10 picture/CVC word cards) focusing on the x5 vowels sounds. All sheets are portrait orientation, pdf format. These cards are designed to be used with a Function Machine, but can be used without.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
What’s it for?
Learners can use these cards to practise sounding out simple CVC/CCVC (Phase 2/3 phonics) words.
Using cards with a Function Machine
Learners sound out the graphemes on one side of each card to read each word then push the card into the top function machine slot (word side facing up) and can see if they are correct when the picture pops out of the slot below (picture side up!)
Using cards without a Function Machine
Learners sound out the graphemes on one side of each card to read each word then flip it over to see if they were correct - looking at the picture on the other side.
What is needed to make these?
x10 sheets of white A4 card (for the printer)
decent scissors
a metal ruler (for ‘scoring’)
scoring tool (to help fold the card accurately)
a glue stick
How to use it?
An adult needs to print the sheets onto card and follow the instructions (included on every sheet) to make these cards double-sided/back-to-back.
All/a set/s of back-to-back cards can then be placed on a carpet/table top, for learners to use on their own/with adult support.
Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words.

x10 sheets (picture and word cards) for simple words to sound out focusing on the sounds ‘a, e, i, o and u’. This download includes x5 sets of x20 cards (x10 pictures and x10 words per set). Portrait orientation, pdf format.
What’s it for?
This phonics activity enables learners to sound out graphemes to read simple simple words (all contain the ‘a/e/i/o or u’ sound) to match with the corresponding picture. This set has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
How to use it?
An adult needs to print and pre-cut the cards into rectangles (dotted guide lines make where to cut clear). Each set (a/e/i/o/u) is a different colour to avoid cards becoming mixed and to help finding a relevant matching card easier.
A set (or more than one set!) of these cards can be placed on a carpet/table top and learners read each word by sounding out the individual phonemes, they then match this to the picture from the same set. Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words.
Resource Details…
The words/pictures included use phonemes/graphemes from Phases 2 and 3 but mainly Phase 2. Phase 3 sounds included are v/w/x/y/z

b d g p q (letters paired - b/d, g/p and g/q)
c o a d g q (letters paired - c/o, a/d and g/q)
l t i j (letters paired - l/t and i/j)
r n m h k (letters paired - r/n, n/m and h/k)
u y v w (letters paired - u/y and v/w)
s f x z e (letters paired - s/f, x/z and e/z)
There is a clear space for learners to write their name on the line at the base of the sheet and a clear space to record the number-date at the top, right.
All letters are positioned on a line - to model how letters should look when positioned correctly on a line.

What’s included?
This download includes x15 A4, portrait pdf sheets to practise reading and writing CVC words mostly within Phase 2. Sounds from Phase 3 include j, v, w, z and sh.
What’s it for?
This activity is interactive and encourages learners to sound out and read simple CVC words and think about what these words mean. Some words of course may have more than one meaning, however for the purpose of this activity there is one illustration for every word. For words which are ‘new’ learners may need to work by process of elimination to identify the correct word/picture combination to record this (in writing) on the sheet provided.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
x5 (colour coded) sets are included.
Each set includes one ‘CVC wheel’ to make with easy to follow instructions.
Once the wheel is assembled when turned different initial letters are revealed to make x9 CVC words per wheel.
CVC words include the sounds ‘an’, ‘et’, ‘ip’, ‘og’ and ‘ug’
ALL words are ‘real’ (not ‘nonsense’) words.
The CVC phonics wheel can be reused time and again.
There is a clear space for learners to write their name at the base of each sheet (left side).
Differentiation
Also included is one sheet in two levels of difficulty. The first sheet only has the initial sound missing (easier), the second sheet has ALL letters missing - for learners to write on the lines provided (more challenging). The level of difficulty is indicated by an icon at the base of each sheet (right side) - green for easier, red for more challenging.
Suggestion
Card is best to use for making this resource as it is stronger and much more robust than paper, making the phonics wheel easier to turn (for learners) and will last longer. Laminating this resource would be ideal if you have the time.

What’s included?
This download includes x24 A4, pdf sheets (portrait) to practise handwriting all lowercase letter sounds (graphemes) in Phase 3 (phonics) - this includes sounds j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ng, ch, sh, th, ai, ee, ie, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er.
What’s it for?
This resource has been designed to enable learners to practise handwriting the fifth set for phase 3 phonics letters - ear, air, ure, er (this is the last/ninth set in the ‘phonics handwriting set’ - which begins with phase 2 sounds). Learners are guided where to write with a starting dot and grey letter shape to follow. The four different sheets vary in level of support and challenge provided making it easy for adults to select just the right level to match each learners ability. Learners could begin at sheet 1 and revisit these letters working through sheets 2 - 4 which incrementally provide less support yet more challenge each time.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support.

This activity has been designed to write straight on. Letters include ‘starting dots’ so learners know where to place their pencil to begin and dots on top of letters guide where to write.
x9 sets
There are nine sets in the same design for all of the letters in Phase 2/3, x5 sets for phase 3…
Set 5 includes sounds j v w x y z
Set 6 includes sounds zz qu ng ch sh th
Set 7 includes sounds ai, ee, igh, oa, oo
Set 8 includes sounds ar, or, ur, ow, oi
Set 9 includes sounds ear, air, ure, er
All sets include four sheets, each numbered and each slightly differently according to the design and level that best suits your learner/s. The numbers 1 - 4 (at the top of each sheet) and the cover image left to right shows the levels in order of easiest (1 - most support, less challenge) to hardest (4 - least support, more challenge).
There are four sheets included, slightly different in design and level of challenge/support provided, though each sheet is numbered 1 - 4 (at the top of each sheet). These numbers (and the cover image) left to right indicate the levels in order of easiest to hardest. Sheet 1 provides the most support with the least amount of challenge, sheet 4 provides the least amount of support with the most challenge. The different designs makes it easier to select the level that best suits your learner/s.

Resource layout
The word search letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font.
The words have been organised into four groups, displayed below each word search. Most nouns have been illustrated next the the word, supporting early readers and learners with EAL.
These words are hidden horizontally (forwards and backwards), vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally (forwards and backwards). Arrows showing the direction for hidden words for each individual word search are displayed at the top of page 1.

Recommendations
I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified as some letters have been used more than once.

What’s included?
This download includes x26 simple, predictable alphabet rhymes - one for every letter of the alphabet. Each rhyme is in colour and black and white (so x52 sheets in total). All rhymes are presented in landscape orientation.
What’s it for?
These rhymes have been designed for learners to practise reading simple words (images make clear what the nouns are) and practise each phonic sound using a pointer (or pointy finger!) Some rhymes are more ‘silly’ than others(!) This is a unique, fun and engaging way to practise reading and phonics that all learners will enjoy. These rhymes also provide a great opportunity to practise using one to one correspondence - an important early reading skill.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
The layout of every letter/sound rhyme is in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent.
The font used is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 50, so a large, ‘easy to read’ size.
Each rhyme follows this structure -
Ants on apples a, a, a.
Ants on apples a, a, a.
Ants on apples a, a, a.
Ants on apples!
Letters a, b, c, d, e, f ,g h, i, j, l, m, n, p, s include the word ‘on’ within the rhyme.
Letters k, o, q, r, t, v, w, x, y, z include the word ‘and’ within the rhyme.
The letter ‘u’ is… ‘upside-down umbrellas, u, u, u’.
How to use this resource
Learners might like to practise reading these on their own, in pairs or small groups or even as a class during a whole carpet session, reading/singing along together.
We recommend printing out the colour versions of these (the colours look so lovely!) and laminating each rhyme to help keep them sturdy, in good condition. Standing the set of lamintated rhymes on one end inside a plastic box postioned in a ‘reading area’ are really enticing, especially when stored with a ‘pot of pointers’ to use with the rhymes.
Suggestions
Classes of early years and year one children are really motivated to use these and very good at practising them quietly to themselves. Younger children have often been heard using ‘whispery voices’ while focused on this reading activity, independently (lovely to see!). Learners also really enjoy being able to use these rhymes with a ‘pointer’ (selected from a pot of pointers!) stored with the rhymes, ready to use.
Pointers are available separately (left/right handed or together), they just need securing to a lolly stick.

What’s included?
Includes ALL x26 alphabet letters with the same colour (grey) outline - so sets can be used in any combination - mix and match which letters/sounds to focus on depending on the needs of your learner/s. This download includes x22 pdfs, portrait and in colour each featuring five/ten images that all begin with one sound - a b c d e/o f g h i/u j k l m n p q r s t v/y w x/z. Letter ‘x’ is the only exception where the x sound is at the end of those words/images.
What’s included?
This download includes x22 pdfs, portrait in colour each featuring ten/five images that all begin with one sound for learners to match - the grapheme and the image with that initial sound.
What’s it for?
This resource is to enable learners to practise identifying the first (initial) sound (phoneme) of objects (images) and match these with the correct, matching letter (grapheme).
Letters have been grouped into coloured sets (red, orange, yellow, green and blue - also available in my TES shop). However, this black and white (grey) set enables adults to focus on the sets learners need additional exposure to.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds.
How to use it?
An adult prints the letter sheets (that are required) out (ideally onto card) and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate the ‘letters’ from the ‘images’. Instructions are included on each sheet itself. These pieces (images and letters) can then be placed on a table top for learners to match. Learners are to match the image with the correct initial letter sound as a two part mini jigsaw puzzle. Each letter only fits the images which have the same initial letter (except x where learners match the end/final sound).
This is a fun and engaging way to practise recognising these letters and identifying the correct initial letter (phonics) sound for five/ten images (per letter).
Resource Details
The images chosen all have a clear initial letter sound at the beginning but are not words which can easily be sounded out. The focus of this activity is purely to identify the initial letter sound for these images - the cross (top right of each image) indicates that these images are not for sounding out.
A sound-out-able (!) version of this ‘Alphabet Match’ activity (with matching worksheets) for every letter (using Phase 2 and 3 sounds only) is available.
The layout of every letter/sound in this set is in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent. This is a fun and engaging way to practise recognising these letters and identifying the correct initial letter (phonics) sound for ten (or five) images (per letter).
